2007 Alumni Award Recipients

   

Distinguished Alumni Award - Stephen Arthur '76 has had a stellar legal career spanning 25 years. This Southport High School graduate is currently Managing Partner of his law firm, Harrison & Moberly. His legal career began after graduating, with honors, from Indiana University School of Law and shortly after, he became law clerk to the Chief Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court. In 1979 he entered the United States Marine Corps and served a variety of positions, including an assignment with the Office of the Judge Advocate General.

Stephen is an author of a 14 volume treatise on Indiana Civil Trial Practice and Procedure, and is currently writing a book on Indiana Products Liability Law, scheduled for publication in 2008. He has served on the Board of the United Methodist Foundation, the Board of Directors for the YMCA, and he is a member of the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, and the Shriners. Amid all of these wonderful accomplishments, Stephen's greatest joy and source of pride are his three children, Ashley, Benjamin, and Jacob.

Distinguished Young Alumni Award - Catina Broughton Barnett '03 began her career with Wishard Health Services in 1999 as an HR Assistant. In eight years she has received four promotions which her colleagues attribute to her perseverance, dedication, and strong work ethic. Catina's presence at Wishard has been widely recognized because of her influence in creating learning opportunities for her coworkers. As the Training & Development Facilitator, Catina considers herself to be on a personal mission to ensure that others around her continue their education.

Catina has not limited her impact to the workplace. Catina is the co-founder of Youth Hope & Inspiration, a non-profit organization that uses Christian principles to encourage a joint, community-led effort to reduce high school drop-out rates, disciplinary offenses, teen pregnancy, suicide, homicide. She believes that opportunities and positive reinforcement is the key to saving youth from becoming victims of high-risk behavior. Catina is currently pursuing an MBA and maintains a 3.75 GPA.

Gene and Joanne Sease Award - George '42 and Dorothy '39 Jacobs have generously given 70 years of service to the University of Indianapolis. George, a retired United Methodist minister, and Dorothy, a retired educator, share a deep love for their alma mater, which is evident in their continued presence on campus. The two of them are frequent visitors on campus, participating in Alumni Weekend functions, attending campus lectures, and more.

The Jacobses are the University's largest greyhound license plate promoters. They consistently assist residents of the Franklin Methodist Home community in ordering and renewing their greyhound license plates. This kindhearted couple exemplifies the commitment and loyalty that was intended when the Sease Award was established. Their lifetime of service will be a legacy to future generations for many years to come.

Honorary Alumni Award - Jan Knoop has given forty years of service to the University of Indianapolis as an Administrative Assistant in Teacher Education. Her infectious dedication has not only brought people to the University, but it has also kept them connected to the University. She has inspired others to join the University community as teachers, students, staff, volunteers, and donors. Jan is noted as an essential reason why Teacher Education alumni stay connected to their alma mater and it is staff like her that gives our University an added value of community, service, and loyalty.

Faculty/Staff Award - Virginia Maher '78 '80 upholds the University's mission, "Education for Service" in her day-to-day activities. Virginia has been teaching in the graduate-level Nurse-Midwifery Program for three years and during that time, she has made a significant impact on and off campus. She has been instrumental in educating students on how to serve women and families.

Virginia not only gives 110% in the classroom, but she also volunteers her time in her community. She is a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, her daughters' schools, and on retreats for engaged couples receiving pre-marital counseling. Virginia is a member of Sigma Theta Tau and chair of the Fundraising Committee. Her strong sense of obligation serve leads her to take her 3rd grade teacher to weekly mass and drove her to take a trip to China to assist with a family adoption. This true advocate for family not only makes outstanding contributions in her profession, but she leads an outstanding, distinguished personal life as well.

Harvey Showalter Award
- Katherine Fries '08 is described by her professors as an outstanding student in the Department of Art and Design. Since her freshman year, she has been active in the Indianapolis Student Art Association and served in leadership roles for two years. She has been a member of the University of Indianapolis Fellowship of Christian Students where she also served on the Leadership Committee. In addition to being a great student, Katherine is also an extremely talented artist and has received the following numerous awards, the Gerald Boyce Art Award, the Mary E. Gott Art Award, and the Anna E. Gott Art Award.
